Fire and Ice

In September, 1939, Hitler and Stalin carved up Poland after signing the Molotov-Ribbontrop  Pact. Its secret protocols gave Stalin free rein to take Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Finland into the Soviet sphere of influence. The Baltic nations quickly caved in to Soviet threats and were occupied. Stalin expected the same when he turned his attention to Finland. There was just one problem... Finland refused Soviet demands and fought back. When the bitterly cold winter of 1939-1940 was over, hundreds of thousands of Red Army troops lay dead on battlefields that were truly a frozen hell.  Led by Field Marshal Mannerheim, Finland's Army brutally punished the Soviet forces. Hitler, watching the Winter War on the sidelines, made a judgment that changed the course of history.
